National success for Alton Convent School’s athletics squad
Alton Convent School’s athletes kick started the athletics season with an impressive haul of medals at the ISA Regional Championships which took place at the Thames Valley Stadium in Eton. The prep and senior school team delivered a total of forty one medals across the track and field events; with twenty five achieved by the prep school alone. Sienna Cowle, Owen Beswick, Jemima Hodges, James Warne and Rose FitzGerald from the prep school and Ella Beswick, Freya Marsh and Alex Mearns from the senior school, as a result of their performance, all secured a place at the national finals.
At the end of June the athletes headed to Birmingham for the ISA National Athletics Competition as part of the London West team.
The squad threw themselves into their individual races and came home with one gold, five silver, and one bronze medals. Owen Beswick in the Year 5 Boys High Jump breezed over the 1.21m securing a new PB and a silver medal!
Rose Fitz-Gerald took part in two races, the first being the Year 6 80m sprint. Rose fought a tightly run race and held on to bronze. Her second event was the Year 6 girls 150m, despite being in lane 8, Rose ran a confident race and comfortably took a silver medal.
Jemima Hodges in Year 5 competed in the 600m, leading from the start only to be pipped on the line, but a well-deserved silver medal was won.
Freya Marsh had a fantastic run in the Year 9 girls 1500m and looked comfortable throughout securing another silver medal for Alton Convent School.
Ella Beswick had a fantastic start to the Year 7 girls 800m race and her consistent pace secured her second place and a silver medal.
Last to compete was Sienna Cowle who was competing in the Year 5 girls ball throw. Conditions worsened throughout the day with heavy rain falling however, Sienna didn't let this affect her performance and threw a huge 38.74m securing her title again for the third year running as National Champion and a gold medal!
Due to injury two team members couldn't attend the nationals but their individual performance at the regionals should not go unmentioned - James Warne in the Year 5 boys 600m won gold and Alex Mearns who had won gold in the hurdles, the discus and the Year 8/9 relay team.
This was a successful day for all the Alton Convent School pupils representing London West and a great individual achievement for all six pupils.
