King Alfred School students celebrate well-deserved GCSE results
It was a proud day for students, their families and staff at The King Alfred School yesterday as the Year 11 cohort earned an excellent set of results.
An all-through co-educational school nurturing young people from the ages of four to 18, the King Alfred School’s emphasis is to discover and maximise the potential of each child.
A continuation of the school’s spectacular ability to support all of its students to achieve great results was clear; 31% of results were at grades 8 and 9 (A*), 52% at 9-7 (A*/A) and a brilliant overall mark of 95% of grades coming at levels 9-4 (A*- C).
King Alfred School’s students remained strong in core subjects, with 9-4 grades achieved by 98% of pupils in English Literature, 96% in English Language and 94% in Maths.
Pupils shone in particular subject areas as well, with all students who took Biology earning grades of 8 or 9 and those who studied Music, Chemistry and Physics all achieving grades 7-9.
This cohort’s achievements follow outstanding A Level results from the school’s Sixth Form last week, where 55% of all grades were achieved at A* and A, to learn more about some of the further education journeys that the King Alfred School have inspired visit here.
Matilda is so grateful for how the school’s teachers took away the ‘stress’ of the exam period, an especially challenging obstacle for young people to overcome as this year marked the return of examinations for the first time since 2019.
“I love the people and the way of learning here at King Alfred so I’m staying to study Psychology, Drama, Chemistry and Physics. You have a great relationship with the teachers and they really helped to take away a lot of the stress of taking the exams – they supported us to believe we could do it.”
Luko was another proud student and reflected on the real sense of community at the school, admitting he strived to do well for the dedicated team of teachers as well as his himself:
“I’m happy with my grades and I’m staying to take the UAL course in Performance and Production Arts which I’m really excited about – I’ve had such good relationships with my teachers and that pushes you on and makes you want to do well for them, as well as for yourself.”
Luko’s mother, Sonita, was another to acknowledge how well the school have done to alleviate stress for pupils and is very appreciative of the ‘relaxing’ experience the school managed:
“The King Alfred GCSE experience from a parent’s perspective has been very relaxing, Luko wasn’t stressed at all during the process and he studied to his ability and to his stress level, so these results are reflective of him working the way he wanted to.”
Robert Lobatto, Head of The King Alfred School, is proud of how the students have overcome the challenge of examinations so ‘admirably’:
“Congratulations to all our students. They have risen admirably to the challenge of the last two years, showing great determination, resilience and talent.
As a school, we would like to see reform and slimming down of GCSEs – whilst it remains the system however, it is fantastic to see our young people achieving so highly.”
Alex Wahnon, Head of Year 11, reiterated that the cohort should be ‘very proud’ of how they have handled the ‘responsibility’ of their learning:
“This group of students should be very proud of what they’ve achieved under challenging circumstances. They have taken on responsibility for their own learning and richly deserve the grades they have worked hard for. Well done!”
Established in 1898 by a group of parents who sought a child-centered education, The King Alfred School continues to embody a sprit that is focused on development of character and individuality.
The King Alfred School philosophy is built on developing creative, confident and socially responsible individuals within an environment that has personal development and pastoral care at its heart.
