St John’s School, Billericay celebrates 90 Years of Independent Education
This week, St John’s School, Billericay, opens its gates to pupils returning after the Christmas break, marking a monumental 90 years of independent education. In January 1928 Mr Higby opened St. John’s School for the first time with a classroom downstairs and living quarters in the upstairs of the original school house.
Set within 8 acres of land backing on to Lake Meadows the school has seen a lot of changes over the years. The main school house, still exists at the front of the school however many of the smaller wooden outbuildings have been demolished to make way for a wonderful three storey building which opened in 2009 and houses the Junior and Senior School.
Today, the school welcomes pupils from the age of 2 to 16 years. Mrs Armour, Headmistress, said “Although our academic success over the years has been exceptional, we are equally proud that we have educated thousands of children who are confident, successful and who genuinely make a positive contribution to society when they leave”.
To mark this 90th celebratory year Mrs Osen, School Principal, decided it would be a nice opportunity to launch a new school uniform. The uniform has changed from royal blue and gold to a navy blue with a navy, green and yellow tartan. “Within six weeks of going on sale, ninety percent of the school were wearing the new uniform with pride” said Mrs Osen.
St. John’s School will be holding a Gala May Ball and other events to mark this commemorative occasion.
